Interview with Heather Morris

January 21, 2020

How did you become a writer?

I can’t remember there ever being a time in my life when I didn’t identify as a writer.  As a child I always carried a notebook with me to write stories in.  Later, when I discovered poetry, I developed a deep and passionate love of the written word.  For me, writing is an almost spiritual experience. No matter what’s happening in my life, writing is my method for transcending.

What inspires you to write?

The magnificent art of creation is what inspires me to write.  Creating people, places, experiences and emotions that I can share with others and bring to life is a deeply moving and profoundly humbling experience that inspires me both as a writer, and as a person.

Could you share some of your challenges as a writer?

Self-confidence is my biggest challenge as a writer.  As a natural born overthinker, I tend to over criticize and question every word to death.  If I don’t keep myself in check, it can become crippling to my craft.

Tell me about your protagonist.  What’s your favorite trait and/or weakness?

Andie is the kind of girl I wanted to be at eighteen, tough and fearless to a fault.  I love watching her struggle with her temper and impetuous nature, and the evolution she undergoes as she learns to control her emotions.  Dylan is a lot more like me; milder natured and less sure of himself. I found watching him come into his own power to be a thrilling experience.

If you could go back in time and give yourself advice, what would it be?

Never let self-doubt cripple you to the point where you give up.  I wasted too many years dwelling on my insecurities instead of developing myself as a writer.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

You have to stay thick-skinned, open-minded and full of hope.  Most importantly; never, ever give up!
