Author Interview

Q: What books/authors have influenced you and why?

A: When I was a kid, my parents kept all of their inappropriate books in a box in the basement. Rice, King, Koontz, and more of the greats were hidden in its depths. Tired of my girl meets horse dramas, I snatched some of these treasures from the box and hid them in my room. Within a few months, I devoured all of them. At the tender age of ten, I was reading about Lestat's curved fangs plunging into the flesh of pale, perfect necks. I never recovered from that ... thankfully.

Q: What has been a fascinating writing research experience for you? Does a memory stick with you?

A: For this first series, I didn't conduct any firsthand writing research. Instead, the stories became a way for me to process some of my experiences. My undergrad degree is in journalism, and I worked at my hometown newspaper for a while. During that time, I wrote stories about a local paranormal investigative group. Much like one of my protagonists, I still can't give a definitive answer regarding my own beliefs in the existence of "ghosts." I do, however, have enough knowledge and firsthand stories to fill five more books about the topic.

Q: Do you have a routine you follow when writing?

A: I have no routine because I'm writing all day. Some part of my brain is always trimming on plot structures or shaping new characters. By the time I find a few minutes to sit at a keyboard, most of the hard work is already done. It's just a matter of putting in the sweat to get it down.

Q: What is your preferred method for readers to get in touch with you? (website, blog, social media?) Please include links.

A: My writing first started finding readers through Wattpad. Check out my novels on there under the username shellyxleonn. My website is www.drsxl.com. I also have an Instagram @shellyxleonn. Finally, I'm on Facebook at www.facebook.com/shellyxleonn
