Author Interview
How do you develop your plot and characters?
The way in which Only Simply Love evolved was extremely organic in that there was no outline or agenda. The story and characters took on a life of their own and I negotiated and tweaked nuances based on what felt inspired. In many ways, the characters revealed themselves as I explored their moods, talents and obstacles, and plot unfolded as a natural consequence of this discovery. There is great value in being intentional and directed while writing, but spontaneity and freedom can lead to unexpected beauty.
Tell me about your protagonist. What's your favorite trait and/or weakness?
The greatest strengths of leading lady Maya Cole also happen to be her weaknesses. She almost magically attracts people and opportunities, which negates a sense of personal responsibility in directing her life and making conscious choices. Her natural empathy and thoughtfulness also make her an unconditionally loyal friend, but she cannot commit to loving and forgiving herself with the same level of compassion.
If you could go back in time and give yourself advice, what would it be?
The advice I would give myself is to trust myself. My resilience. My power. My bravery in facing the unknown. And perhaps most importantly, my answers. Not because they're right, but because they're mine.
