Interview with Katelyn White

How did you become a writer? -- After falling in love with a movie on Netflix I started writing fan fiction for it online. My readers at the time kept telling me that they'd love to see more writing from me so I ended up starting a Young Adult Contemporary piece online, and once I started I couldn't stop.

What inspires you to write? -- The New Adult genre is so underrepresented, and as a twenty-something myself I can only hope that I'm able to provide other people my age with books about people our age. When I was a teenager - my heart belonged to the teen fiction section, but now that I'm older, I want something that represents people my age - and since my choices are limited I've decided to write them myself.

Could you share some of your challenges as a writer? -- I try to read one book a week, so I spend a lot of time comparing myself to other authors which leads to lots of imposter's syndrome. At the end of the day, I have to remind myself that every author has their own style, and every voice matters.

What are your current/future projects? -- I'm currently working on another NA piece called COLOR ME BLUE. It's a Contemporary Romance piece about a mother and daughter rebuilding their relationship after someone important to them dies in a freak accident at their family-owned zoo.

Do you have a routine you follow when writing? -- Sort of. Recently, I've been in the habit of writing out my chapters until I reach about 25,000 words and then as I write additional chapters I'll go back up to the beginning of my manuscript and spend time editing the earlier pieces that I wrote. So it's sort of a pattern. Write a new chapter, edit an old one.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? -- Don't let people tell you what to write, or how to write it. Writing should be creative and a way to express yourself. If your true self isn't shining through in your work people will know.

What is your preferred method for readers to get in touch with you? -- Preferably via Twitter (@katelynmwhite_)
