Character Interview: Jessica Prince

From the novel JESSICA PRINCE AND THE CRIMSON CAPER

by Dana Gricken

Main Character: Jessica Prince

Are you married? In a serious relationship? Leaving your options open?

Since I’m only sixteen, I’m not even thinking about marriage. But I have a total crush on Eric Worthington—a boy who goes to my school. He’s on the football team—and he has the muscles to prove it. Rumor has it he’s dating the mean girl of the century, Holly Blackwood. Ugh, I don’t know what he sees in her. But his family is business rivals with my Uncle Henry, so we don’t have much of a chance, anyway. Sigh…

Do you own a house? Move around? Crash on couches?

I live with my Uncle Henry at Prince Manor since my parents died when I was young. It’s a big house—even I get lost in it sometimes. I let my best friend, Ben, crash on the couch when his father is working the nightshift. My hometown, Willowbrook, California, is pretty safe at night, though. And Prince Manor has the perfect view of the beach!

Who’s your best friend? How did you meet? Memory that makes you laugh?

I have the best girlfriends in the world—Tiffany and Madison. Tiffany’s parents work for my uncle at Prince Enterprises, while Madison’s parents won the lottery and moved to Willowbrook years ago. We bonded over fashion and music and became instant BFF’s! Ben Clark is a total geek who doesn’t fit in at Blackwood, but I think it’s part of the reason why we’re such good friends. As much as I love Mads and Tiff, Ben has more of a sense of the real world.

What’s your favorite movie? Why? Who is your favorite actor/actress?

I’m obsessed with Julia Joy, the teen detective in a mystery series by British author Emily Pratt. It’s set in the future, but she’s an old-fashioned sleuth—we’re talking notepads and magnifying glasses. Hollywood has turned most of her books into movies, and I’ve gone to see every single one! It’s what made me such a huge mystery fan.

What do you wish your superpower was?

That’s easy—being able to detect a lie instantly! Being a teen sleuth, you won’t believe how many people lie to my face. I wish I could sense when they’re telling the truth and when they’re not—like a built-in lie detector in my brain. But they can never hide the truth very long—I manage to find out in the end. I make sure to pay attention and look for inconsistencies instead!

Do you have a bad habit? How long have you tried to break it…or not?

Okay, I’ll admit it…sometimes, I’m too nosy for my own good. I’ll ask questions some might think are too personal. Uncle Henry and Ben tell me that all the time. But I can’t help it—I love a good mystery and I’m curious about the world! Why would I want to break it when being nosy helps me solve crime? Whatever works, right?
