How did you become a writer?

I always dabbled in poetry and while at University of South Carolina graduate school, I took creative writing from two great Southern writers, William Price Fox and James Dickey. Mr. Fox became a valuable mentor and although I never stopped writing, it took a back seat for many years to my career in horses. I wrote my first novel during Covid.

What inspires you to write?

The stories and characters in my head—they refuse to be quiet.

Could you share some of your challenges as a writer?

Although I’m semi-retired, my jobs of teaching/coaching competitive riders and judging horse shows are physically demanding and involve long hours. It’s hard sometimes to change gears and write. I also have a demon recliner that never stops calling my name.

Tell me about your protagonist. What’s your favorite trait and/or weakness?

I have a huge crush on Richard Merrick in A Symphony for the Earl. He’s smart, has a dry sense of humor and does many things well. My favorite trait is his natural reticence (because it so sexy when he lets go) and his weakness is that he’s a teeny tiny(??) bit arrogant.

What are your current/future projects?

I have two spinoffs of Symphony planned and right now I’m revising my first novel, a medieval romance.

Do you have a routine you follow when writing?

Yes! I write best early in the morning (I usually start at 5 a.m.) and need classical music in the background and lots of Arizona half tea/half-lemonade. It’s helps if my two smooth fox terriers are in my office keeping me company.

If you could go back in time and give yourself advice, what would it be?

I’ve had a very exciting and rewarding life so far doing horses, but I wish I had started writing seriously earlier than now. I tend to get totally immersed in what I’m doing at the time instead of juggling several things at once.
