Ralph grew up in southeastern Tennessee, writing short stories and working part-time at his father’s funeral home. After earning his Ph.D. in English at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, he moved to Quincy, Illinois where he teaches creative writing and young adult literature at Culver-Stockton College.

1. How did you become a writer?
For as long as I can remember. I've enjoyed telling stories. As a child, I used to write fanfiction About the video games that I was playing like Super Mario World and Pokémon. Through my adult years, writing became a form of therapy, allowing me to escape and heal from some of the darker moments of my life.
2. What inspires you to write?
Writing helps me make sense of the world. It helps me see the possibility of hope for the future. Writing also helps me connect with other people, especially those who grew up feeling alone and scared in showing their true self.
3. Could you share some of your challenges as a writer?
Probably the biggest challenge for me is distancing myself from my writing, especially if the story originated from personal experiences. During the later stages of revision, I have to make a real effort in putting my emotions aside so that I can edit my work. I can also get too obsessive over trivial details, like spending hours over the wording of a single sentence. When that happens, I take a break and go for a jog around downtown Quincy to clear my head.
4. What are your current/future projects?
Right now, I am editing my debut novel, And When I Die, an LGBTQIA+ suspense YA centered around a family mystery in the fictional town of Arlington, TN. I'm also working on my second novel that is set in the same town, but with an entirely new set of characters and narrative.
5. Do you have a routine you follow when writing?
I try to write every day, even if it’s only a few sentences. On the weekdays, I tend to write at night and on the weekends because of work. Since I teach, I get more time during the holidays and summer break.
6. What is your preferred method for readers to get in touch with you?
