How did you become a writer?
As a nonspeaking autistic person, my use of language has not always been well understood. For a long time, people underestimated the depth of my thought and what I had to say. In some ways though, writing changed that — becoming a powerful tool in advocacy, communication, and connection with others. It now gives space to more deeply articulate experiences that might otherwise go unshared, and to make sense of the world for myself and readers.
What inspires you to write?
I am driven by the gap and desire to challenge what is vs. what could be. I find myself writing to explore experiences that are often overlooked or misconstrued within broader conversations; using letters and words to explore those complexities in different ways. I feel if my writing can spark a new way of thinking, a conversation, and/or reflection, then it serves a purpose.
How do you develop your plot and characters?
I have started with what the character has in comparison to what they might need, and then I explore the emotions and tensions that come with those differences. I find the plot grows outward from the mismatch, especially when a character’s needs are not met.
Could you share some of your challenges as a writer?
Time, focus, and staying consistent are all big challenges for me as a writer!
But a more personal one has been navigating moments of feeling underestimated. Learning to move forward despite the assumptions held by others has been an important part of my growth.
How does your antagonist create conflict?
In my work, the antagonist is not always a single, clearly defined person. More often, it represents a barrier, which can be a person, system, or deeply ingrained assumption.
For example, the idea that people who cannot effectively communicate through speech are not capable of complex thought can act as an antagonist, creating conflict between the character and how they are treated. Therefore, the conflict can be silent and subtle, but it is always powerful and shows up as the character(s) resisting or questioning norms.
What are your current/future projects?
For now, specific details are still under wraps as they evolve! As always though, I aim to challenge assumptions, while making space for perspectives that are commonly ignored.
Do you have a routine you follow when writing?
I don’t really have a writing routine, though lately I try to find some time to write in a collaborative space each week (even if that time is limited). Some weeks are more productive than others, but it's been such a fun journey. I definitely write when I can!
If you could go back in time and give yourself advice, what would it be?
I think I would remind myself that ‘you are a writer’ — everyone is!
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Writing is a skill for everyone.
It can begin the moment you decide your voice matters and you want to convey meaning in this way. You also don’t need to wait until your work feels perfect or complete to move through the writing process. What’s most important is getting ideas down!
What is your preferred method for readers to get in touch with you?
I really enjoy connecting with people on social media or through my website: www.JordynZimmerman.com.
