Cynthia Pruitt, Character Interview

1. What did you have for dinner? Did you go out or eat in? Alone or in company?

I enjoyed grilled tuna with a side salad at my own place. I try to have a good portion of protein and fresh fruit or vegetables to stay in shape. Plus, life on a fishing vessel may require eating more canned and packaged food, so I’m enjoying the fresh produce while I can.

3. Are you married? In a serious relationship? Leaving your options open?

I guess you can say leaving my options open. In all honesty, I did happen to meet someone a few days ago at the shop. But he was from out of town and you know, it was just a flirty thing. My focus is on earning the open slot on the fishing vessel. It’s not every day that an established, successful crew needs a new member and I don’t want to squander my chances by focusing on romance.

4. Do you own a house? Move around? Crash on couches?

I currently live in my childhood home, although it is odd now, as if the building itself is a casualty of my parents’ divorce. It does feel empty at times, when I’m sipping coffee in the breakfast nook or having a drink, watching the sunset. It can be lonely, yes, but all that should change once I land my dream job.

6. What’s your earliest memory? Good/bad? What would you change?

Hmm, it’s funny you ask that. I was just thinking this morning about the time my sister Jackie and I stole change from my parents and spent it all on bait. We thought we’d prove to our brother we could fish just as well as he could. It’s a bit tough to catch anything off the dock, but as kids, we didn’t know any better. If I could change anything? If anything, I’d change where Jackie and I are at now. I wish we could be that close again.

7. Who is your best friend? How did you meet? Memory that makes you laugh?

My best friend is Elise. We met at the library, when I tripped over her feet. She had been sitting on the floor, legs sprawled out in front of her, reading a book. She still is that way with books—she even works at the library now. Anyways, I tripped and profusely apologized. She was calm and collected about it and introduced herself. We haven’t separated since.

10. Do you have a bad habit? How long have you tried to break it...or not?

I do tend to distance myself whenever I encounter conflict. I try to solve the problem myself and not rely on others. Sometimes I literally run, all around town until I can clear my head or find a solution. I know it’s something I have to work on if I’m going to be a part of a crew on a fishing vessel. But what better way to work on yourself than when you are forced to?
